“Sloth Slept On” by Frann Preston-Gannon. (Book Review)

Some neighborhood friends notice a sleeping creature hanging upside down in their tree and set off to do their best private investigator work to discover his identity! They turn to books for their answer and discover in a book about the rainforest that he is a Sloth! (They learn lots of other useful facts about him too!) The friends box him up and send him back to the rainforest where they believe he is from… not realizing he is an escapee from their local zoo!! ….Boy will the sloth be surprised when he wakes up! Dolly enjoyed the sleepy little title character. The illustrations are beautiful watercolor paintings on a white backdrop. The illustrations are filled with tons of visual humor, thanks again to the busy parents who don’t notice their kids lugging around a big sloth, and the kids who don’t notice all the posters and news articles about a sloth that’s broken out of the zoo. We love the vignettes as the kids imagine the creature’s mysterious past – Was he a former astronaut? An ex-pirate? This story is really funny and sweet and a great way to encourage your child to look up the answers to their questions the old fashioned way – in a book!
