“Elwood Bigfoot: Wanted: Birdie Friends!” By Jill Esbaum. (Book Review) |

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you – that’s a bigfoot! Elwood Bigfoot, to be exact! He’s hairy just like you imagined, but this bigfoot is also smiley, friendly, charming…. and lonely. He’s on the hunt for friends of the avian kind, some feathery friends to pick berries with and have slumber parties with. Unfortunately his loud, boisterous excitement to make the birds his friends is getting him nowhere. He really goes “out on a limb” to get them to like him, builds himself a tree house, throws them a party and even builds them an paradise of fun, Birdieland. What can Elwood do to make some birds his real friends? Dolly and I found so many things to love about this book but you’ll just have to read it for yourself! For starters, we love Elwood’s smiling face! His big, loud clumsy attempts at friendship are so silly you will find yourself giggling along! Jill Esbaum has created such a lovable title character in the mythological(?) bigfoot, a first for children’s lit I believe…and she nailed it! The illustrations by Nate Wragg are almost too perfect! Lots of pine texture to the scenery and backdrops, great expressions from the frightened birds and enough visual humor to boot! So break out your binoculars and search your nearby bookstore for the this bigfoot sighting you don’t want to miss!
