I write fun fiction books for tweens and I also have a household of them (4 kids= 7, 9, 11, and 13). With my newest middle grade book, Cici Reno #MiddleSchoolMatchMaker, I decided one of the issues I wanted to deal with in the book is the physical changes girls go through and how being late to develop or early to develop can each come with its own host of challenges.

Middle school is a test, but Cici Reno has all the answers. She’s the go-to girl for advice. She’s cool, she’s funny, and she’s enlightened (thanks to yoga classes at her mom’s studio). So when her pretty BFF, Aggie, is too shy to speak to the boy she’s crushing on, Cici goes online and does the talking for her. The only problem is, Cici starts to fall for the guy herself! For the first time in her life, she doesn’t have a clue.

While most of the time Cici is bursting with confidence, she’s also a little self-conscious about her small stature. Inside she feels ready to tackle high school but on the outside she thinks she looks like a fifth grader. She doesn’t think any boy would really notice her. Her best friend Aggie, on the other hand, had a growth spurt over the summer and the boys are noticing her a little too much, and she’s just not ready for that kind of attention. Aggie has had a long-time crush on one particular boy, however, and wants to talk to him but finds she’s too shy and bumbles over her words each time she tries. In steps Cici to help her out. But when Cici begins to fall for him herself things get really complicated.

With my own daughters, I try to teach them to be comfortable in their own bodies and stress that everyone develops in their own time. I know it’s hard to not compare themselves to others but I tell them to love and appreciate the bodies they have. And yoga helps them to do this. My girls practice yoga with me and in my book, Cici is a yoga-fanatic who spends a lot of time taking classes at her mom’s yoga studio.

Throughout the book, each chapter begins with a tweet from Cici (@yogagirl4ever) in which she instructs readers in how to do a yoga pose and what the benefit of that pose is. Here’s one that helps boost confidence:

Middle school can be difficult for kids because they’re all growing and changing at different rates and in writing this book my hope was to make realistic characters tweens could relate to and root for. Check out Cici Reno #MiddleSchoolMatchmaker at any of these outlets:
